All these resources will be used when exploring the question:
What is the value of Literature?
What IS Literature?
Is the literary canon an outdated/impossible concept?

The focus of this session was to challenge the student perception of the definition of Literature. The resources that can be found at the top of the blog were used to generate class discussion and explore the VALUE of Literature. Students were asked to consider the function and purpose of Literature. Students were provided with an Anthology of eclectic literary texts that will be the textual focus of the final three sessions. In this session, Wordsworth's 'Daffodils' was compared with the prose of Russ Litten and the class were asked to consider the value of each text and whether Russ Litten could be considered a canonical author. The concept of the literary canon was considered and the quality of the class discussion was outstanding.
The final task of the session was for students to produce a HAIKU that captured the student view of the value of LITERATURE. This task seemed to cause a level of anxiety that could only be described as 'hysterical'....however, once students placed pen to paper and heart-rates returned to a conventional bpm, the quality of the poetry that was created was INSPIRATIONAL.

HOMEWORK: READ THE ANTHOLOGY. Which is your favourite text? Which is the least valuable text? Which texts should be considered canonical? Read the essay that is included in the Anthology. The next session will definitely include a section within which students will be expected to construct poetry. Bring your creativity!! Students should click on the links at the top of the blog as these texts will be referenced in next week's session. WATCH AND LISTEN TO THE WORK OF KATIE TEMPEST.
